The inaugural release of Cap Maritime Pinot Noir 2017 is “distinguished” according to Jancis Robinson, who described it as “very bright and vibrant with a fresh finish.” Although this is the first vintage, that energy appears to be the defining character of Cap Maritime’s new wines.

The grapes are handpicked and gently transported to the Boekenhoutskloof winery in Franschhoek. There winemaker Gottfried Mocke ferments the juice in concrete tanks using natural yeasts, before pressing it into French oak for 16 months. Only 200 cases were made, so this will quickly become very hard to find. Therefore, don’t miss out on this Pinot Noir with its sweet nose of cherry liqueurs, Parma Violets and wild strawberry, followed by a much darker palate of blackberries, black cherries and – like the Chardonnay – that fresh sea breeze across a pebble beach. That clean seam of acidity makes this a phenomenal food wine that will have you coming back for sip after sip.

The debut from Cap Maritime suggests that this will very soon become one of South Africa’s stars, if it isn’t already.
